Nasser Announces Nationalization of Canal
In this primary source video, you will see clips of footage taken from a BBC documentary about the Suez Crisis. This clip of Nasser's speech declaring the nationalization of the canal is important because it shows how the crisis began. As said in the introduction, Nasser was upset at the British and Americans for not supporting them in the construction of the dam on the Nile, so this was his retaliation. His speech was heard by many Egyptian citizens and caused great excitement and celebration around Egypt. Though short, I feel that it greatly explains how the Egyptian people and government felt, since most of the crisis focuses on Europe and Israel.
